Enjoyed the author's style of writing as well as the plot. It moved quickly and clearly. Character development was thorough and the setting of Savannah was a nice change from many other fiction/crime books. My only negative comment would be that the ending of the book left some loose ends.

The Echo Killing A Mystery A Harper McClain Mystery Christi Daugherty 9781250148841 Books Reviews
The Echo Killing strikes a perfect balance between characterization, plot, and setting.
I loved Harper's character. She's young, independent, and tough as nails when necessary, but also sensitive and, at times, vulnerable. Her character comes alive in this story, as if she could step off the pages and go about her day in the world. The supporting and minor characters are all well developed, each with their own quirks that make them unique individuals.
The plot starts as a slow burn, gradually building until I became as obsessed as Harper in finding answers. The whodunit aspect is not obvious, and we have a couple great twists. The author's own experience as a crime reporter adds an extra layer of insight and realism to this story.
The Savannah setting comes alive. Rather than the usual southern charm of this type of setting, instead we see the dark edginess hidden in the shadowy night.
I normally want closure in a book, even when it's part of a series. Cliffhangers irritate me, at best. This book does have a bit of a cliffhanger ending, but I didn't sputter and complain. (Okay, maybe I did, but just a little.) For the most part, this story stands on its own. The crux of the plot is resolved, and we're left with a couple of loose threads to be pulled in book two. You could read this book on its own and be satisfied.

if it bleeds it leads...
This was a newspaper reporter procedural, is that a thing? Well it should be....This is the first book in the Harper McClain series and let me tell you the series is off to a fantastic start....
Harper was born to be a crime reporter.... she puts her everything into her job... it’s personal... it’s her calling.... so when she starts investigating a murder that is eerily similar to the murder of her mother over 15 years ago.... she will stop at nothing to find out the truth....
Harper was such a likable and relatable character.... yes she was damaged, but that didn’t define her... she had friends, she had a love interest (yes there is Romance in this book) she was the kind of girl you would want to go out to lunch with.... this was very refreshing... so many times with female “damaged“ characters they have such an edge to them you find them a bit prickly and hard to like.... Harper was very much likable.... The secondary characters were all very likable as well.... especially her love interest Luke, he was quite the good guy....
The mystery/Investigation in this book was done very well.... i’m not always a huge fan of police procedurals, however I might be a huge fan of newspaper reporter procedurals.... I liked how Harper went about her investigation... I enjoyed all her rule breaking.... The outcome was realistic, but definitely surprise me, did not see that coming.... also really appreciated the aftermath of the investigation... it was quite interesting and gave you some closure and understanding... very much looking forward to the next book in this series....
I would absolutely recommend this to lovers of mystery/suspense... but keep in mind it leans a little towards romantic suspense... in case that is an issue... but I do want to clarify for my friends with an aversion to romance, I don’t think this is eye rolling worthy romance😉
*** thank you so much to the publisher for a copy of this book ***
The writing was filled with cliches to the extent that it was easy to predict what would happen next. The main character, a reporter for a major city newspaper, came across like a grown up Nancy Drew.
First of all I have to say that Savannah is one of my most favorite places to visit and I love mysteries so this book was a win, win for me! The book was great, I loved the characters, I loved the plot I did guess the outcome but still enjoyed the book. What I loved the most was the book has many opportunities to be series. So many unanswered questions. I hope the author continues with this character.
EXCELLENT...
A great mystery! I could feel the humidity of Savannah as I read it. Looking forward to the next installment!
Ehh it was ok
