I enjoyed this book. The writing was pretty good and age appropriate. The character development was okay, and who doesn't love a world before humans came along and ruined it? It was an engaging read, though the ending was pretty predictable. To me anyway. This is about a Black Pegasus colt named Star who was born to fulfill a legend, except in the legend where, on his 1st birthday, he could either turn into the destroyer or the healer. So, because the last black colt turned into the destroyer, most of the other Pegasus herd feared him and wanted him killed before his first birthday. There was a bloody, violent war, and you'll have to read the book to find out what happens.
Though I enjoyed this book, I think it would have been just as good without all the violent deaths. I think it would be a very sad read for any animal lover and most girls love horses. I will probably let my 11-year-old granddaughter read it if she wanted to.

This book is exactly the same structure as the Warrior Cat series, right down to the "medical mares." This fact made me extremely disappointed. I was expecting something original, but clearly this is not. I ended giving the book away to a friend because I couldn't stand to finish it.
What a wonderful story with many great lessons behind it. A Wonderful message that will reach people who have experienced what Star went through, being different, feeling alone, feeling uncertain. A great tale of true friendship told through the lives of horses..Looking forward to book 2
Overall, I liked this book a great deal and the only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars were due to the confusion of having so many character names (and flicking back and forward to the character list on a app isn't that easy and interrupts the story) and the possibility of it being somewhat too violent for its intended middle-grade readers.
As an adult lover of pretty much any kind of book about horses and magical horses, I was entranced by the world of pegasi created by Ms Alvarez. The five herds, the herd structure and the prophesy of the black colt - I loved it! It's a complex and complete world, and one I look forward to returning to with book two. I particularly loved the ending as Star's prophesy is fulfilled and a new era for the pegasi herds begins.
One reviewer commented that horses aren't this violent - I beg to differ. Have you seen a wild stallion defend his mares? Add another layer of intensity as a mythical pegasus and the level of violence is completely believable, even if I did squirm and gasp at some of the action. Would it have been too much for me as a pony-mad 10-year-old? Yes, probably, but (1) i was pretty sensitive and (2) no children's books were this violent when I was that age and the world has certainly changed in the past 30+ years. I think it's up to each parent to decide. I'd love to see what child readers thought of it.
The Guardian Herd series is on my must-read list, for sure.

Guardians of the Herd Starfire
The book Guardians of the Herd Starfire, is a great book. The book Guardians of the Herd Starfire, is about a baby pegasus named Star. Star is a black pegasus that is only born once every hundred years and holds enough power to destroy all the pegasi or heal them all. The setting is across the sea in a place called Anok. The plot is where a baby pegasus has to survive past his first birthday to heal all the herds. The main characters are Star and Morningleaf.
The main conflict is where Star has to survive to his first birthday without being found by the herds.Which, is kinda hard when he has to live in the vein which is the area of land that separates the herds. I think the theme is that true friends will save you. The reason I think that is because throughout the book Morningleaf saves Star life a lot of times and at the end she sacrifices her life for Star.
My favorite part of the book is the end. That is my favorite part because it is so action packed. It’s like will Star survive, or will he perish saving the people he loves. Also, at the end Star becomes a leader not a follower, which is exactly what my parents want me to be a leader not a follower. Also this book reminded me a lot of a books that I earlier read. It reminded me of the pegasus series.
If you are a reader who enjoys fantasy, quirky characters, and animals this book is not for you. If you don’t enjoy those things with split perspectives this book is not for you. I would have to rate this book 5 stars because of its great characters and it’s fun attitude unless there is a fight going on.
I am in love with is series. My thoughts were bring read, because a while before I found this series, I though, "I want a series with pegasi or unicorns." And then here we are!
I've read all the books in the series so far and I love it. The scenery is nice, the writing is well done, and the characters are so interesting. This sounds weird, but it's like Jennifer really takes being a pegasi and perfectly characterizes it. If you like Warriors or Guardians of Ga'Hoole, you are likely to enjoy this series. The plot is gripping and really makes you want more.
A few complaints are that the writing can get tedious or jumpy, making the scenes just a little confusing to follow, but a little re-read can help you. Sometimes, the writing seems a little repetitive, too, but again, it's not too bad. I also find the characters to sometimes be just a bit cliche, but I must say, can you really be 100% original with everything these days? And lastly, I know it's a book, but sometimes getting to the plot points seems like it takes forever. Maybe I'm impatient. Also, I'd consider this 13+, it can get a tad violent,
This series is beautiful. I really hope this is just the first arc and that we get more in the future, and I'm so sad having to wait for the fourth book until September! This is great, Jennifer, and I love your work! Please keep it up! I read your author bit on the third book, and you really are an inspiration.
