In this small book of seventeen lyric and narrative poems the author chronicles the grief he experienced following the shooting death of Matthew Solomon, September 4, 2008 on the streets of San Francisco. Starting with Day 2 and going through Day 78 of the third year, Denham's poems capture not only the small details of particular experiences and the poignant, wrenching internal states of grief but also the profound learning that always accompanies those states. In this, the poems go beyond the individual and call our attention to the thousands of young people who lose their lives to street violence in our cities.

This small collection of poems written by someone who so close to a tragically young murder victim, witness the real cost of our culture of violence. The words are pure and very accessible. This is a pure heart speaking without cleverness or cunning. It is straight talk about a dead-level issue. For those who have experienced violence or know someone who has. For those entering a pattern of violence or those sitting in prison, or just for those who need to hear, "Our children, our children...", this collection of poetry is a message from the clear-hearted. Looking for Matthew eBook Bill Denham Reviews
Looking for Matthew is an eloquent, moving, haunting memoir. The idea that we -- the adults of this violent society -- were complicit in creating the context of Matthew's murder, that we pulled that trigger, is more than troubling, it is bewilderingly painful. My responsibility as an all-too-deficient parent has been a cross to bear over the long years I have witnessed and tried to alleviate the struggles of my children. But I hadn't taken that next step, accepting that my failure is ultimately a lethal failure to all children. This is a very difficult idea for me, for how do we live in a way that makes murder less possible, that makes lovers of killers? By raising this question, Bill Denham has planted a seed for us to nurture. I am grateful for these poems.
