Anderson Crow Detective 9781517455606 Books
Anderson Crow is a great character, and so is his wife and the others who live in their town. He always manages to come out looking good despite his many slips and dullness. I enjoyed spreading this book out over quite some time--reading a chapter here and there to add some humor to my day.Product details

Anderson Crow Detective 9781517455606 Books Reviews
This novel was published in 1920. It consists of a number of interconnected humorous short stories that describe the adventures of Anderson Crow, the marshall of a small village called Tinkletown, in New York. The author, George Barr McCutcheon was popular in his day, and is considered part of the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. (His main claim to fame is as the author of "Brewster's Millions", which has been filmed at least 10 times, once as a Richard Pryor vehicle.)
Anderson Crow is an easily aroused and easily fooled bumpkin, and he is the primary butt of the humor, although most of the villagers are also played for dopes and dupes. So, this isn't Andy of Mayberry territory. In fact there is enough ethnic humor, (mocking German-Americans circa world War I), and generally small minded humor that this book really qualifies as a curiosity rather than an entertaining read. One story turns on the funny aspects of being a wife abuser. Another turns on how humorous it is to have four wives die from the rigors of farming, so that you end up with five mothers-in-law. One story turns on all of the twenty year old men marrying "dried up spinsters", (40 year old women), when it turns out that this will keep them out of the War draft.
So, it was sort of interesting to see what passed for popular rural humor in 1920, but it wasn't very entertaining, and after a while it stopped being interesting. You get the general idea long before your 353 pages are up.
That said, and to be fair, there are some sharp lines and some acute observations. For its time and place this was solid work. It's just a long hard slow slog without a lot of payoff, and sooner or later you'll probably decide you've had enough.
Anderson Crow is a great character, and so is his wife and the others who live in their town. He always manages to come out looking good despite his many slips and dullness. I enjoyed spreading this book out over quite some time--reading a chapter here and there to add some humor to my day.
