Ohmyohmyohmyohmy!!!!!! What are you doing to me Laura Thalassa?! The Queen of Traitors picks up where the first book left off (if you’ve not read it, there are minor spoilers ahead. Consider yourself warned!). Serenity has been taken by the Resistance, but not before her memory was wiped by the King’s right hand man. She doesn’t remember anything, giving the Resistance nothing, but allows them to plant seeds of doubt in her mind.

As I said in my review of the first book, Serenity is one of my favorite characters. She’s a strong female lead, but she struggles in this book. She’s lost her memories (which are quickly restored) but with it comes the doubts and hatred for Lazuli. She questions his actions, not understanding….or maybe not willing to believe his motives. She’s dying though and knows that Montes will not let that happen. She’s tired and ready to accept her fate, if only he will let her.

Montes is a bit unstable in this book. He lost his best friend and now he’s losing Serenity too. He fears nothing except death and he will do whatever it takes to save her from it.

This book is full of betrayals from their closest friends and themselves. Instead of working as a team, Montes and Serenity work against each other, antagonizing and loving all at the same time. Overall I LOVED every word! It was terrifying, dark, and lovely all at once. Is that even possible?! But that ending!!! I’m dying. I can’t take it!!! What the heck was Montes thinking?! I need the next book ASAP please!!!!

The Queen of Traitors The Fallen World Volume 2 Laura Thalassa 9781942662136 Books Reviews

"I'm the ugly truth, and he's a pretty lie, and we're always, always circling each other."

Have you read The Hunger Games? Can you imagine a grittier, more passionate, darker version of Twilight without supernatural elements? Okay. How about a more grownup, realer Divergent written in an even more gorgeous way that's just full-on believable in all of its messed-up beautifully star-crossed complexity? Yes. YES!!!!!!!! This is IT!!!!!!

I am blown away by this book. Everything—everything about it sucked the air out of me. I dabble in books myself, so I'm choosy about the novels I spend precious hours on. I might start on one and not finish it because it doesn't hold my jaded attention. With The Queen of Traitors, the author had me in a stronghold I couldn't get out of even if I wanted to. Because it's that. Freaking. Good.

With The Queen of Traitors, I'm having a hard time keeping the exclamation points at bay. And I'm not even saying a word about the book. Here are a few quotes to illustrate some of the sides that drove me blissfully crazy throughout The Queen of Traitors

The complex, star-crossed storyline
"I don't remember him, and yet a part of me aches with such ferocity that I know he's imprinted in my bones."

The understated humor in the midst of their dead-serious reality
The place got firebombed. No wonder nobody's here.

The intriguing personality of King Montes
—"'Serenity?' Is it my imagination, or does the monster in front of me sound frightened?"
—"He knows how to handle me. I don't like to be handled."
—"I have read him wrong, but not in the way he thinks. My mind needs him to be fully evil, and he's not."
—"He's quiet, and that's probably for the best. Usually when he talks someone ends up with a bullet between their eyes."

I need to stop.
I'd splatter examples of crazy, sizzling chemistry, the shockingly different storyline and conflict, and the hardcore ways of Serenity up here too. I want to, believe me.
Gah! Just one... just one more.

—For a girl who has lost much, she seems awfully entitled. Queenship suits her all too well.
—My vicious Sleeping Beauty. This is our violent fairytale.

I envy you who haven't read this novel yet. Enjoy.
I really liked the Bargainer series by this same author, and so was holding out hope for these books, however I was largely disappointed. Reading the Fallen World Series was a lot like sitting through a fifteen hour viewing of the flogging scene in The Passion of the Christ on repeat. The characters are well fleshed out, the world largely two-dimensional but decently described for a first-person narrative, and the events contained enough action to keep the reader gripped. It was difficult to sympathize with the protagonists as they were selfish, self-sabotaging, and fairly self-absorbed though I suppose that can be forgiven as they are self-described as narcissistic and conscienceless. The events quickly scaled into an ever-increasing repetition of dramatic separation that completely negated any character or relationship development up to that point. And the plot summation was largely dissatisfactory after having just endured three novels of almost endless torment. I found myself skimming through whole chapters much as one fast-forwards through the gory bits of movies just to see if the torture would ever end. If you watch films like Amazing Grace where you have to sit through two hours of pain for three minutes of victory and think to yourself "How could I have made the suffering ten times as long?" these books are for you.
