The fictional viewpoint of Frida's sister was a unique and interesting way to talk about Frida's life. I enjoyed the style and found it engaging as well as entertaining. Since the premise is the sister speaking to a psychologist, I would agree with some of the comments that the berating of her jealousy at times became tiresome. However, I did feel it was in keeping with the character that the author created as Christina. I'm now reading Frida's letters which most of this book is based on and am amazed at how clearly I remember Frida's life from the way the book was presented. I would call this book faction because the fictional story was based upon real facts which pulls the story through.
I had to keep reminding myself while I read this novel that it is a work of fiction, based on real events. It is so well-written that it is difficult to differentiate between fact and fiction. At times you feel bad for Frida, and her physical and emotional pain. At other times, you simply want to slap her and tell her to snap out of it. The narrator, her sister Cristina, actually deserves less sympathy. She had a "poor me, I'm the lowly sister of a genius" act a little too down pat. This was my first in-depth glimpse into the world of Frida Kahlo, and I will definitely read a true biography to learn more. I recommend this for anyone who is interested in art, the life of an artist, or Mexican culture. Overall it is a fascinating novel, and extremely evocative of a turbulent time, place, and person.
This novel is a very interesting take on the life that surrounded famous Latin American artist Frida Kahlo. Told from the perspective of her sister, Cristina, we see more than just the eccentric paintings Kahlo is known for. Her life was full of medical ailments, love, lesbianism, betrayal, self-doubt and confusion, which she projected onto everyone around her, especially her younger sister. While it is a piece of fiction, Mujica is well respected in academic circles for being an expert on Frida Kahlo and Mexican history, which really adds another dimension to the story. You can brush up on your knowledge of art, Mexican politics and communist influence on North America during the early twentieth century.

The only problem I had with this novel is the fact that Mujica has Cristina tell her story to a psychiatrist, which I thought was unnecessary. You don't need an excuse to tell your story when it's as interesting as her's. This part of the story was not developed, which made it seem like an afterthought.

Overall, it is a very interesting, educational read.
Many artists have painted their emotional and physical pain, but no artist has painted pain like Frida Kahlo. What could be the experience that created the famous oeuvre of gory self portraits in ghoulish settings? What could a woman see in Diego Rivera - a whale of a man with a reptilian face? What of Frida and Diego - the separate houses - marriage, divorce and marriage again - were they really communists? What of Leon Trotsky?

Barbara Mujica poses some answers. Through the narrative of Christine, Frida's younger sister, speaking to her psychiatrist, Mujica develops a portrait of a willful self centered child. This Frida, no matter the cost, stands up to bullies who taunted both sisters for being Jewish. At 7 years old, Frida cracks dirty jokes, essentially plans another sister's elopement and generally pushes the envelope as far as she can. Frida is indulged in her education but becomes a prankster, seductress and political radical at school. With her tragic accident, the self centeredness grows. She eventually meets her match in Diego. Her most famous extramarital affair is to conquer the man her husband admires.

This Frida fits the facts. The author didn't need to bring in anything new (as she notes in the "Authors Note".), there is enough material on record to show the character Mujica creates. The book is highly readable, Fans of Frida and Diego will surely be interested in this book, but may not like their portrayal.
Frida by Bárbara Mujica is a fascinating historical novel about a fascinating woman. Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in 1907. She was firecracker of a woman who painted with gusto despite the fact that most of her life she was in great pain. At the age of six, she contracted polio which left one leg thinner than the other. When she was a teenager, she was on a bus when a trolley collided with it and Frida was impaled by an iron handrail through her pelvis. Throughout her life she had to endure numerous operations and spent a lot of time confined to her bed. Some of her paintings depict the gruesome pain she suffered. Most famous are her self-portraits. Many times she would paint looking in a mirror from her bed. Mujica explains, "Art kept her going. Creating beauty out of pain helped her make sense of things."

Frida married Diego Rivera, a famous Mexican muralist. Their relationship was volatile as both their artistic temperaments collided. Frida was five-foot-two, but could hold her own against anyone. That included six foot tall, three-hundred pound Diego.

Frida was one hot tamale with a unibrow and a spicy disposition who didn't let anything slow her down. Bedridden at the opening of her art exhibit she insisted on being taken there on a stretcher by ambulance. "The great Kahlo has done it again! She has made jaws drop and eyes pop." Even if you're not a fan of her art, Frida's story is compelling. Her life was both tragic and triumphant. This was a good book written with captivating style.
