Good read but not much new. Gierach presents logical and reasonable explanations for why certain flies worked in the paast and why they will probably always work. It is easy to forget that fish aren't reasonable, or logical. They may or may not think like humans. I have caught them on pop off tabs from soda cans, pieces of rubber, and bare hook. My best flies/lures alll have one or more hooks plainly visible and they still eat them. Good Flies Favorite Trout Patterns and How They Got That Way John Gierach 9781585746118 Books Reviews
I was surprised at some of these flies. It’s a collection of older flies than I expected... and I’m not a spring chicken! But it’s spun it a typical way by this great fishing author.
The book is basically a rant on different flies and how they differ and what you can do and shouldn't do to them. Informative and interesting but it's not a typical John Gierach book like you've read before. Now, would I still buy this book . . . YES, it's still full of interesting tips for those who spend the winter tying.
Great bench side companion. As always this author is educational as well as entertaining . If you're interested in the origin of a fly as well as the best way to tie it, this book delivers. Good investment!
Its good, but it not "Trout."
so good i am rereading it a week after i first read it
as always John at his best, this one is more for fly tiers ,but as any other book by J.G. fun to go thru and must have for the collection
I am 2/3 through this book. Its a good read, but focuses primarily on small flies from Western streams. I haven seen the Wooly Bugger or Clouser yet.... in the book. Lots of variants on nearly the same fly - as the author admits. This is the 3 or 4th book I have read by Gierach. Its more similar to his book on Bamboo rods, rather than the others like Trout Bum etc. It details this topic more than it reflects on experiences and life as his regular books seem to.
